We went round and round a few times before I swam clear, but not before I got tagged three times: arm, shoulder, and chest. The sting on my arm was the most painful, since it was right near my elbow joint. <br /> <br />The lifeguard sprayed a mixture of ammonia and water from a plastic bottle they keep handy. He suggested a topical application of powdered meat tenderizer diluted in water at home; the tenderizer would break down the protein of the stinging nematocysts still embedded in my skin. <br /> <br />It was about as painful as a horsefly's bite and had faded away after a couple of days. I still surfed after that, but I bought a rubber wet suit.
