| My Man o' War encounter came in 1975, when I was learning how to surf in the Pacific Ocean, at La Jolla, California. I was on a short board, riding a breaker towards the beach when I totally wiped out (hey, I was still learning), and fell back off the board on to a Man o' War. We went round and round a few times before I swam clear, but not before I got tagged three times: arm, shoulder, and chest. The sting on my arm was the most painful, since it was right near my elbow joint. The lifeguard sprayed a mixture of ammonia and water from a plastic bottle they keep handy. He suggested a topical application of powdered meat tenderizer diluted in water at home; the tenderizer would break down the protein of the stinging nematocysts still embedded in my skin. It was about as painful as a horsefly's bite and had faded away after a couple of days. I still surfed after that, but I bought a rubber wet suit.
